Optimising how you use Linkedin

LinkedIn is an essential platform for every student, it can allow you to access a multitude of opportunities and open many doors. I started my LinkedIn at the start of this year, and I’ve been able to grow my network significantly.  Out of all the social platforms, I personally believe LinkedIn is one that students should get to know the most, as some of the connections you make could be the doorway to your next internship or job opportunity.

I have put together a list of some advice and tips for when it comes to using LinkedIn:

Connect with alumni from your institution

When searching for people on LinkedIn, you can filter your search by institution. This may include your current/past university, or your high school. By reaching out to alumni, this can really help grow your network. Alumni are usually more than happy to help with any questions or give advice, as they have had gone through the same experiences as you

Use the LinkedIn premium free trial

You can sign up for one month free of LinkedIn premium, which gives you access to loads of free online courses from which you gain certifications. These courses are a great way for you to explore areas of interest. I personally recommend the ‘Google analytics essential training’ and ‘Digital marketing foundations’ courses if Marketing is an area of interest for you. Just remember to cancel your trial before the end of the month to avoid being charged.

Post relevant content

By sharing relevant news articles, or current campaigns you like, you are likely to get a higher reach. By sharing this content, it shows you have an interest in the topics/subjects you are looking to pursue. Also, adding relevant hashtags to your posts can help your content to be seen by more people.

  1. Great tips, thank you Kathryn! Before job interviews, I like to have a wee nosey of a company's and current employee's LinkedIn profiles . It's a good way to seek out useful information :)
